The Highland Club Past and Present |
The Highland Club today is an elegant development of
superlative holiday apartments and facilities.
The Grade A listed Highland Club site has a rich and varied history stretching back to the days of Culloden and Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Originally the Highland Club was built as the ‘fort’ from which the village of Fort Augustus takes its name;
it was later rebuilt as a Benedictine abbey, incorporating the original bastions of the fort, a few of which remain visible today.
The monks later founded The Abbey Boys’ school and ran it as such throughout most of the twentieth century.
They were forced to close the site during the 1990’s due to financial pressures, and finally abandoned it in 1998.
Since then it has passed through the hands of several individuals, falling increasingly into a state of disrepair,
until it was bought in 2003 by The Raven Group, who specialise in sympathetic conversions of historical buildings.
Currently nearing completion of this renovation process, the site has now been re-born as ‘The Highland Club’.
Today the austerity of monastic life has given way to modern comfort and leisure, and
The Highland Club holiday apartments
is very much a contemporary haven for getting away from it all - far removed
from the stresses and strains of life, yet with a wealth of activities and luxuries to enjoy in the Highlands Club.
Bordered by water on three sides — the Caledonian Canal, Loch Ness and the River Tarff — and with over
twenty acres of mature, private grounds and gardens, there is plenty to do both in and out of the water.
For the more energetic Highland Club offers several sporting facilities including a tennis court, cricket pitch,
badminton and table tennis. The Highland Club swimming pool is projected for completion in 2011.
More leisurely pursuits vary from fishing down by the loch or river, or messing about in boats,
to a gentle game of croquet on the Monastery Lawn or a game of chess with the giant set in the Cloister Garden.
Laid back afternoons and evenings in the Highland Club holiday apartments can be spent down by the loch-side barbecue area
or sampling the delicious seasonal fare and soaking up the atmosphere at The Boathouse Restaurant,
which has been remodelled on the original building and boasts a spectacular loch-side setting.
The Club Lounge, housed in the original monks’ refectory, is a luxurious
Highland Club communal area
with full size snooker table and broadband internet access - the perfect place to spend a couple of hours
at any time of day or night, whether curling up with a good book or catching up with friends.
Please note that development at the site is still continuing — this is reflected in the current rental rates, as there may at times be some movement and disturbance.
